(DENVER, CO) October 2014 The Open Media Foundation has received a Technical Assistance grant from fellow nonprofit, the Denver Foundation, allowing them to diversify their efforts in community outreach.
This $2,500 in funding will allow the Open Media Foundation to further its goals through additional programs such as an inclusiveness television show, as well as media education scholarships for people who identify themselves as Latino/a or as having no post-secondary education. These scholarships can be used to cover up to 100% of the costs associated with classes offered by the Open Media Foundation, while funding lasts.
“We want to utilize these funds to strengthen the inclusiveness commitment not only in our own organization but to help bring it to others through a new community show focused on the inclusion in nonprofit organizations throughout the Denver area” said Ann Theis, Station Director.
The Technical Assistance Grants awarded by the Denver Foundation seek to enable nonprofits to do their work more efficiently and effectively by allowing organizational members to learn something new while increasing their capacity to lead, manage and direct their efforts.
In 2012, OMF conducted an extensive evaluation to identify the demographics being served and underserved through their service, trainings, and efforts like Denver Open Media. The analysis revealed that, in comparison with the demographics of Denver and the community in which OMF resides, the individuals being served tend to have a higher level of education. Individuals with no college experience were the most under-represented demographic group, followed by the Latino/a community. "Reaching the Latino/a community and persons with no post-secondary education has been a priority of the Open Media Foundation ever since," says John Aden, Media Education Coordinator. "We are grateful to The Denver Foundation that we can continue these educational scholarships to members of these communities."
The Denver Foundation mission is to inspire people and mobilize resources to strengthen the community. Since 1925, The Denver Foundation has helped many to be catalysts for good by building charitable legacies. As Colorado's oldest and largest community foundation, they help people give back to Metro Denver in ways that are meaningful both to them and to the community.
