OMF Receives Knight Foundation Prototype Grant

OMF is excited to announce receiving project funding from the Knight Foundation Prototype Fund for She said, he said (SSHS). The fund will provide $35,000 and training in human centered design for SSHS, which is an extension of OMF’s work with The Colorado Channel.

She said, he said focuses on implementing transparency in the everyday life and work of the Colorado representatives by providing candid documentation of their stances and effectiveness. Funding from the Knight Foundation will be used to create an audio thumbprint for each legislator, using voice recognition and audio analysis libraries to compile audits from sessions of the Colorado State House and Senate. If the project is successful, anyone will be able to search for specific discussions and topics of interest mentioned by a particular legislator.

The Knight Foundation Prototype Fund aims to specifically aid in the creation of projects related to media, technology and information. Innovators of selected projects, like SSHS, participate in a two-and-a-half day human-centered design and project planning workshop. Over the next six months, innovators will perform research and test core assumptions before implementing the project to assure that the project will be successful.

Leo Kacenjar, Lead Developer at OMF, is currently in the six-month period of developing SSHS and is excited about the powerful viewpoint the project will provide. “We believe that seeing a representative in action can provide a unique perspective that is not available through the media or campaigns.”
